The lovely young lady playing the cop was tragically killed early on New Year's Day. She was a friend of a friend and you can get a glimpse of how genuinely awesome she was by reading this post written by Gerard of Matador Records here. We're working on video parts for a little bro-vid called "Spark City Flats". If you're baffled by the meaning of the title (I was), "Spark" comes from telling the guy about to hit a new spot to "spark it" and "City" because, why the hell not?, and "Flats" is the cheapest beer in the ABQ. It'll be done before Christmas and should be view-able on this site, vimeo, and hard copies for the purists.
Scott Bennet of Board Shop fame took me to some old street haunts in Tulsa a while back.

In other 'zine news one of my favorites, SAUCE, has gone strictly digital; but fear not this will only equal more great content over here! We've visited Albuquerque the last two summers and are completely smitten with the city and the people in it. Along with Ray Chavez and Grant Biederman; Mikey has made the two trips especially easy on me. He (along with the others mentioned) have basically laid out a menu of spots to skate, which is so much more appealing than just going to the park in city X and not talking to anyone. It's nice to go somewhere and not even touch a skatepark, aside from a mini-sesh at "bum park" and skating Indian School, which might as well be a skatepark (in a good way).

It may not be the best, most thought out idea adding someone to the team that lives in a different state- but if we did things the right or easy way this thing would've never been started. Either way I'm super excited to have another friend on the team and he's even offered to help with art and some Shark Bait stuff. So, this is going to be a ball for all involved and I'm super stoked on everything.

Took Dr. Biederman (feeble) over to Pawhuska yesterday for a fun session. Then I mangled my wrist and now I have to wear this splint for 3 weeks until I can get more x-rays to see if any of the bones in there are broken. Three weeks is a long time for a skateboarder and if nothing is broke now, I'm pretty certain it will be by the time I go back. That's life.

So Vans had this weird concept for people in Texas and Oklahoma to "Get out and do something". I never really need any encouragement and wouldn't generally consider going to the mall "doing something", but there's no way in hell I'm not going to jump at a chance to see Ray Barbee and John Cardiel. John Cardiel or DJ Juan Love played nice reggae tunes for everyone and it was cool to just give that guy a big-ass high-five and bullshit for a minute. (even got to do a little top 5 segment for the next Shark Bait in between his sets). Ray Barbee played live with the Mattson 2 and they actually have at least one album out- I believe their title is just Ray Barbee and the Mattson 2- it's on Galaxia if you're interested. It's all instrumental and if someone asked me to put a label on it I would call it "groovy elevator music" and not mean that in a derogatory way whatsoever. I was happy Friz brought along his VHS copy of Ban This" to get signed, that's pretty golden to have and and the Barbee signature makes it that much better. I though of bringing my Ray Barbee Krooked "Gest" board and my John Cardiel (that rad Lance Mountain series) to get signed, but didn't feel much like lugging them around a mall or having them in a hot car. This was a great time considering where it was and it was an honor to meet two guys who are literally in my top 5 skateboarders of all time.

For two consecutive years Megan and I managed to see Toys That Kill on our Anniversary. The guys in The Arrivals were excited for us and we became instant pals with Dave (left) and Isaac (right). They even gave us a shout-out while they were playing (as did Todd Congelliere from Toys That Kill). Dave is also in a Guided By Voices tribute band called "Text Book Committee" back in Chicago, which I thought was awesome, and Isaac is the fellow who did the interview with me a few issues ago for Shark Bait. (this photo was supposed to be down there with all the other stuff from the show, but didn't show up- sorry here's some locs skating and then back to this show...)

Here's the few shots I got from the Anadarko contest I judged this weekend. Can't remember this dude's name, but remember debating whether or not it was justifiable to deduct points for wearing a tye-dye (die) Grateful Dead t-shirt. I didn't and he ripped, but for the sake of my eyes, he's getting the black and white treatment. Wallie frontside grab. (edit- his name is Dillon Bryant. Thanks, Josh!)
After Wes was out of the running this was my guy, Ryan Mabray. He won best trick with a slappy up the back of the rail, across and down. Pretty sure he got 2nd in the overall contest. Cool guy- gave him a Smash t-shirt, stickers, and 'zines for ripping so hard.

I have a friend who makes jewelry out of guitar strings. It's very neat and pretty, you could call it "wearable art" for sure. She came down from Kansas City last year and sold some of her stuff via a booth at a craft show. Her attitude was, rightfully, that her stuff was too good for a craft show in Ponca City, Oklahoma. It kind of made me realize that these craft shows (along with the indie bazaar in OKC) are actually really great. When you go to or participate in an art show the attitude is somewhat "I make art and am more important because of it", where at these craft shows the feeling I get is "I make this shit for fun and you should make some shit for fun too." There's no arrogance in it whatsoever- it's just sharing your hobby with others and if they want to buy it cool, if not, that's fine too. The lady sewing cat designs onto sweatshirts isn't going to stop doing it because she can't pay her mortgage with craft show money. She probably has a real job and other hobbies too. That's how art has always been to me too. I used to not really even show it to people- it was just an excuse to spend large chunks of time listening to music and trying to make something I'd enjoy looking at. The fact is that you or anyone could probably do what I do much better, but the question is- are you?

While we were skating Stillwater on Saturday I guess the PC staff photographer came to our park to shoot some photos of skating that ended up on the cover. I got this really inspiring post card in the mail today. It was always cool how the presumably very busy Ian MacKaye took the time to send a "thank you" post card whenever I sent him 'zines, but this one is a little more special to me. When I mailed him a copy of my book I asked him to send some feedback if he didn't mind, and I half-expected it to be negative. It may not be the best sign that people keep complimenting the title that makes fun of myself, but I'll take all the positive reviews I can get. Old stuff- Norman Music Festival a few weeks back....
I RESIGN- two of the dudes from The Needlepoints. These dudes are super serious- it's pretty cute. Great band.
Trey is the best dude ever. Where most people would just giggle to themselves as a lady painted blue walked by- he strikes up a conversation with her.

So THRASHER was kind enough to review issue #37 in the new issue. Every time this happens I'm always completely out of the issue that gets reviewed and end up having to make more. It's not that I mind, it just feels stale to go to the trouble to re-print something that seems like it was a lifetime ago. To make it cooler for myself and the reader I made four new pages to go into it.
